Brief History and Description

Assaí is a tall, slender palm tree with pinnate leaves that can grow up to 80 feet tall, and its fruits are dark purple when ripe. It is indigenous to South America and grows widely in Brazil, Colombia, Surinam, and the Amazonian floodplains, and it grows well in highly warm and humid tropical conditions.

Culinary Usage and Nutritional Properties

Assaí fruit is rich in C and B vitamins, minerals, fibre, protein, omega-6, omega-9, and omega-3 fatty acids. It is also an excellent source of dietary fiber. It is rich in polyphenols and has antioxidant properties and essential amino acids.

The juice of this fruit is used as a drink. It is a nutritious and refreshing food that is also used to produce ice cream, mousse, and sweets.

Economic and Environmental aspects

Assaí is a valuable evergreen tree that serves multiple environmental purposes.

Assaí is experiencing growing economic significance and production in the Amazon Area. Assai juice has become the new high-dollar "rich man's" health drink in the United States. The fruits are utilized in the production of a revitalizing drink known as acai, which stands as the most significant nonwood product of the Amazon River Delta. The annual production exceeds 100,000 tons, valued at over US$40 million. Additionally, Assaí oil's rich array of nutrients has made it an important ingredient for use in antiaging personal care products, as well as its medicinal properties, making it an economical product.

Annual Yield

Each Assaí tree yields about 20 kg of fruit annually.
